Karsten Vogel Saxophones (soprano, alto, tenor), bass clarinet, keyboards, composer, bandleader
Karsten Vogel is born January 11. 1943 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He played the alto saxophone from the age of 14, and soon he co-led a jazz quartet with his brother playing the drums. They even won the Danish championship in jazz (!) in 1964. 1966 – 68 he was a member of John Tchicai’s Cadentia Nova Danica as musician and composer. In 1967 he formed Burnin Red Ivanhoe, that would show up to be a legendary group on the Danish and European jazz/rock-scene . During the years this group played well over a thousand concerts including tours in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Faroe Islands, Finland, Germany, UK, and India. In the years 1972 – 77 Karsten Vogel formed and led another legendary group, pioneers of instrumental fusion Secret Oyster. With this group he toured in the countries mentioned above and also in France and Iceland and played concerts and tours with among others Captain Beefheart, Herbie Hancock, Shakti and Weather Report. With a growing status as a kult band in USA followed re-releases of the original four albums in the US and from 2007 and onward re-union concerts in USA and Denmark and a new live album. From 1978 Karsten Vogel has worked with smaller groups under his own name, with the group Birds of Beauty, with famous Danish actor Frits Helmuth and as a key member of Robin Taylor’s avantgarde units. Karsten Vogel also in the 80th and 90th was a respected DJ working for DR, the national broadcasting company in Denmark . He has received several grants from the Danish Ministry of Culture and since 2004 he has been honoured with a lifetime grant as composer.
